DEMPSEY YOUNG 1954-2006

Sad news from The Bluegrass Blog:

We are deeply saddened to share the news that Dempsey Young, an original member of The Lost & Found, passed away early Sunday morning. His unique mandolin style and quick smile were as much a part of the band as Allen Mills’ distinctive voice. Allen and Dempsey kept Lost & Found on the road together with myriad personnel changes since they formed the group in 1973. Dempsey will be missed by his family and a great many friends in bluegrass music.

Allen Mills of The Lost & Found asked that we post this for him, in response to the many folks who have expressed condolences regarding the death on Sunday morning of their dear friend and bandmate, Dempsey Young.
.
"The out-pouring of love - the calls, emails, thoughts and prayers from our friends and fans has been absolutely overwhelming. We sincerely appreciate everyone and everything, for accepting and enjoying our 33 years of music together. Our fans and our God will determine our future…continue to keep us in your prayers."

Dempsey is survived by his wife Lynette, daughters Stephanie and Demetra living at home, and son Christopher (USAF), stationed in Qatar. His band family consists of Allen Mills, business partner for over 33 years, Scottie Sparks and Ronald Smith.

Each week on the show, Jack Ryan will highlight and showcase some of the nominees in each of the various categories. Then, you'll have a chance to vote for your favorites in each of the categories.

Texas Music! Singers and songwriters from the Lone Star State are the showcase this week on WIVK's Americana Highway with Jack Ryan. Artist Spotlight: ALECIA NUGENT

Born and raised in Hickory Grove, Louisiana, Alecia Nugent grew up surrounded by music. Her father, Jimmy Nugent, started the Southland Bluegrass Band the year she was born, and even as a young child she was being invited with her brothers and cousins to sing a special number with the group. “We lived and breathed bluegrass and gospel,” Alecia recalls, and as she grew older, that immersion translated into a growing role with the band – first as a guest, singing a featured number like Holly Dunn’s hit, “Daddy’s Hands,” and then, from her late teens, as the Southland Band’s lead singer. Between informal family singing sessions at home and her appearances on stage, Alecia developed a command of bluegrass and country harmony and a broad-ranging repertoire. “My dad was pretty much my biggest influence,” she says. “If we weren’t at a festival, he had us sitting at the piano with my mom, teaching us to sing harmony parts and how to blend them together.” Applying those lessons to bluegrass classics by the Stanley Brothers, Jimmy Martin, Flatt & Scruggs and more, she also found herself drawn to recordings by country artists such as Conway Twitty, Merle Haggard, George Jones and Reba McEntire – the latter, she says, “probably my biggest female influence at first.” With the passage of time, those influences and experiences were melded with her natural talent to form a singer of remarkable beauty and power.By the end of the 1990s, Alecia had accumulated a small but devoted core of supporters, and one of them – Mississippi bluegrass promoter Johnny Stringer – eventually offered to bankroll a solo album that would spotlight her interpretive genius. Given free rein in choosing a producer, she turned to Carl Jackson, whose roots in the state’s bluegrass scene had blossomed into a world-class career as instrumentalist, singer, songwriter and producer, and even before the CD that ultimately became Alecia Nugent was completed, the confidence of her backers bore fruit. With its engaging mix of bluegrass and country classics and rarities, Alecia Nugent serves as a perfect introduction.

Artist Spotlight: JAY CLARK

Jay Clark grew up in Winchester, TN and began playing guitar during his high school years. Since leaving Winchester to attend college, he has been actively involved in songwriting and performing.
During the summers of 1993 and 1994, Jay performed at Dollywood and various bluegrass festivals with Keith Garrett (currently with Blue Moon Rising) in a traditional bluegrass brother-style duet. Later, he helped form a traditional bluegrass band, The Stringbeans, with Joel Keebler, Clint Cagle, and Robin and Cruz Contreras. The Stringbeans played frequently in Knoxville and were voted the “Best Bluegrass Group” in 1999 by the Readers Poll of Knoxville’s alternative weekly, The Metropulse.
In 1999, Jay moved to Stillwater, OK to pursue a PhD in Wildlife Ecology at OSU. While in Oklahoma, he continued songwriting and would occasionally return to Knoxville to perform with Robinella and the CC Stringband, a band formed by Robin and Cruz. Robinella and the CC Stringband landed a major recording contract with Columbia, released their debut album with Columbia in May 2003, and their newest release, Solace for the Lonely, on Dualtone Records in February 2006.
After returning to Knoxville in 2003, Jay performed numerous shows backed by the CC Stringband, opened for artists such as Billy Joe Shaver, the John Cowan Band, and Malcolm Holcomb, and frequently performed with Robinella and the CC Stringband. In May 2004, he released his debut album, Pen to Paper, which featured 12 original songs written or co-written by Jay. He also contributed to Robinella’s most recent album by singing harmony on two songs and co-writing another.
Jay recently moved to Hazel Green, Alabama where he is continuing his songwriting and performing. His follow-up album Progress was released in February 2006. Artist Spotlight: ROBINELLA

Robinella was born and lives in Maryville, TN - just south of Knoxville - in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains. Daughter of a baptist deacon and choir leader, she’s been singing in church and the shower her entire life but it wasn’t till college that she started singing out and about. Robinella majored in art and boys 101 at UT. She met her husband at a bluegrass jam in 97. She founded “Robinella and the CCstringband” in 1999 with husband and musician Cruz Contreras. Together they fused their broad tastes in music to create a sound that was and still is officially undefinable. On her two independent releases, as well as her Columbia records recording, Robinella surrounded her songs and voice with mandolin, fiddle, acoustic bass & guitar, and electric guitar. On her upcoming release on Dualtone records, Robinella and producer Doug Lancio built upon the bands traditional instrumentation expanding the bands instrumentation, colors and styles. The album entitled "Solace For the Lonely" contains twelve new originals and will hit the record stores on Tuesday, February 21st.
